Why Northern Utah Homeowners Choose Us

Your kitchen is the heartbeat of your home. It’s where homework happens on the island, where holiday meals are prepped, and where guests naturally gather. But if you are staring at dated “honey oak” from the 90s or a dark cherry finish that sucks the light out of the room, you probably feel stuck.

You have two bad options:
1. Replace them: Spend $30,000+ and live without a kitchen for six weeks during a messy demolition.
2. Hire a cheap painter: Get a general contractor who brushes latex wall paint over your doors, leaving you with sticky surfaces, brush marks, and peeling edges in six months.

There is a third option.

At HQ Painting, we specialize in professional kitchen cabinet painting. We don’t just “paint” cabinets. We bring them back to life! Uriel and our team use Sherwin Williams Gallery paint and a rigorous preparation system to give your existing cabinets a factory-like finish that looks brand new, for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

We serve homeowners across the Wasatch Front and Park City, from the historic homes in Holladay to the custom estates on the Draper bench. If the wood is good, we can save it.

Cabinet Painting With A Carpenter’s Eye

In Utah “cabinet painting” can sometimes be a loose term. For some contractors, it means taking the doors off, leaning them against your garage wall, and blasting them with a sprayer.

That isn’t how we operate. When you search for cabinet painters near me, you often find companies that treat cabinets like drywall.

Uriel has spent over 25 years in the coating industry. He understands that cabinets are furniture, not walls. They face abuse that walls never see—grease splatters, wet hands, banging pots, and constant touching.

If you skip the chemistry, the paint fails.

We know that the dry air in Sandy and Cottonwood Heights affects how primers adhere to the surface. We know that the UV rays hitting a kitchen window in South Jordan can yellow cheap lacquer. We approach every cabinet refinishing project with a technical mindset. We identify the wood species (Oak? Maple? MDF?), assess the existing finish, and choose a primer that bonds chemically to the substrate.

We don’t chase volume. We aren’t a franchise trying to hit a quota. We are a husband-and-wife team focused on “Approachable Luxury.” We give you a magazine-quality kitchen without the pretension or the “luxury tax” pricing.

Our Cabinet Painting Promises

Quality

We treat your cabinets like a car finish. No brush strokes. No roller stipple. Just a smooth, hard shell that wipes clean.

Reliability

We stick to the schedule. A kitchen remodel disrupts your life enough; we won’t add to the stress by ghosting you. If we say we’ll be there at 8:00 AM, we are there.

Pricing

Olga provides a clear, itemized bid. You will know exactly what the process costs before we lift a finger. No hidden fees for “extra coats” or hardware installation.

Happiness

We work clean. We respect your home. We don’t leave until you are thrilled with the transformation.

The HQ Kitchen Cabinet Painting Process

Achieving a factory finish requires a system. We don’t skip steps. Here is exactly what happens when you hire HQ Painting for repainting kitchen cabinets.

Phase 1: Assessment & Protection

Before a single tool is touched, we establish a clean-room environment to ensure your home remains pristine throughout the process.

  • The Total Containment Bubble: We seal off the kitchen using professional-grade plastic zip-walls, preventing dust or fumes from escaping. Inside this zone, we also protect your appliances with specialty coverings and seal cabinet interiors so your dishes and items stay safe—meaning you don’t even have to empty your cabinets.
  • Heavy-Duty Floor Defense: We don’t rely on flimsy drop cloths. We protect your tile or hardwood with Ramboard (industrial-strength construction board), taped securely at the edges to create a puncture-proof barrier against foot traffic, equipment, and spills.
  • Surface & Appliance Shielding: Every inch of your countertops is wrapped and taped for total coverage. We extend this same meticulous care to your stainless steel appliances and fixtures, treating your home’s high-value surfaces with the respect they deserve.

Phase 2: Label & Disassembly

We label every single door, drawer front, drawer pull and knob.

  • Mapping: We create a map of your kitchen. “Door A1” goes back to “Cabinet A1.” This ensures the hinges align perfectly when we re-install.
  • Hardware Removal: We carefully remove all knobs, pulls, and hinges. We store them safely or help you count out new hardware if you are upgrading.

Phase 3: The De-Grease (The Most Critical Step)

This is where most DIYers and inexperienced painters fail. Your kitchen cabinets are covered in invisible layers of cooking oil, hand oils, and silicone (from cleaning sprays like Pledge).

  • Chemical Clean: If you paint over grease, the paint will separate. We use an industrial degreaser to strip years of grime from the wood.
  • Rinsing: We rinse the surface thoroughly to ensure a neutral pH balance before sanding.

Phase 4: Sanding & Repair

Paint needs something to hold onto. We create a “mechanical bond.”

  • Dustless Sanding: We use Festool sanders connected to HEPA vacuums. This scuffs the old finish without filling your air with dust. We are creating “teeth” for the primer to grip.
  • Grain Filling (Optional): If you have heavy-grain oak cabinets and want a smooth, modern look, we can fill the grain. (Note: This is an extra step and cost, but the results are stunning).
  • Caulking: We re-caulk seams where the cabinet molding meets the box to ensure seamless lines.

Phase 5: The Bond Coat (Primer)

We don’t use “paint and primer in one.” That is a marketing gimmick.

  • Specific Primers: Depending on your wood, we use a shellac-based or oil-based blocking primer. This seals in tannins (the natural acids in wood that bleed through and turn white paint yellow).
  • Sanding Again: After the primer cures, we sand it smooth. We check for any imperfections and fix them before the color goes on.

Phase 6: The Topcoat

We use 2K (two-component) Polyurethanes.

  • Why Not Latex? Standard latex wall paint stays soft. It feels “gummy” in hot weather and peels when you scrub it.
  • The Hard Shell: Our industrial coatings add a hardener (catalyst) to the paint. Once it cures, it is harder than the wood itself. It resists chipping, scratching, moisture, and yellowing.
  • Spraying: We spray the finish. We do not brush or roll. This gives you that “dipped” look found on high-end custom cabinetry.

Phase 7: Reassembly & Pride Walkthrough

  • The Reveal: We bring the doors back, install the hinges, and hang everything.
  • Adjustment: We adjust the hinges so the doors sit straight and close properly.
  • Hardware: We install your knobs and pulls.
  • Cleanup: We remove the floor protection and zip-walls. We sweep and vacuum.
  • Final Walk: We’ll walk through the kitchen with you. We inspect every inch. We don’t ask for final payment until you are smiling.

Our Cabinet Painting Services Across Northern Utah

Not every kitchen is right for kitchen cabinet refinishing. Olga is honest during the estimate. If your cabinets are cheap particle board that is water-damaged and falling apart, painting is like putting lipstick on a pig. We will tell you to save your money for new cabinets.

However, some homes in the Wasatch Front have solid wood cabinets with “good bones.” They just look dated.

Residential Interior Cabinet Painting

Perfect Candidates for Refinishing:

  • Solid Oak: Dated color, but structurally sound.
  • Maple: Often yellowed over time, but takes paint beautifully.
  • Cherry: Too dark for modern tastes, but a high-quality wood.
  • MDF Centers: Excellent for painting because they are stable and don’t expand/contract as much as wood.

The “Two-Tone” Trend: We often paint the upper cabinets a clean white (like Chantilly Lace or White Dove) and the island a deep accent color (like Hale Navy or Iron Ore). This adds depth and a custom feel to the kitchen without the cost of a remodel.

Frequently Asked Questions

An average sized kitchen in Northern Utah takes about 5-7 working days.

Typically, no. We paint the exterior of the boxes, the face frames, and both sides of the doors/drawers. The interiors are usually a melamine or clear-coated maple that is best left alone for durability. However, if you have glass-front cabinets, we do spray the interiors to match.

Absolutely, as new knobs and pulls act like the “jewelry” of the kitchen. However, please note that filling old holes is excluded from our warranty due to the risk of cracking, so we recommend reusing existing spacing where possible. Additionally, while we install your new handles, we require homeowners to install any new hinges themselves.

We offer cabinet painting throughout Northern Utah, including:

  • East Bench (Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Millcreek)
  • South Valley (Sandy, Draper, Riverton, Herriman, South Jordan)
  • Davis County (Bountiful, Woods Cross)
  • Park City & Heber Valley
  • Northern Utah County (Lehi, Alpine)

Look for painters who specialize in cabinets, not just walls. Ask about their process. Do they clean with degreaser? Do they sand? Do they use specific bonding primers? At HQ Painting, Uriel is happy to explain the chemistry behind our process so you can be confident in your investment.
