4 Questions To Ask An Interior Painter Before You Hire Them
Chances are you know somebody who’s hired a painter for a project they later regretted.
They found someone with decent reviews, a reasonable price, and what initially seemed like a simple job.
But somewhere between the estimate and the final walkthrough, things went wrong.

It’s not! And the reason it happens so often isn’t just bad luck; it’s because most homeowners don’t know the right questions to ask before they hire a painting company.

When you hire a company, ask about who is actually showing up. Ask whether the crew painting your rooms are dedicated painters or just generalists. The answer will tell you a lot about what the finished product will look like.
2. Ask exactly what their prep process looks like
You’ve heard the saying “Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance,” and the 5 P’s also relate to painting!
Some homeowners feel awkward or nervous about asking the painters to talk about their prep process. But in our opinion, prep is where the job is actually won or lost.
A painter who can’t (or won’t) go into specifics about their prep process might not have a good one.
What you want to hear is that they sand where needed, that they fill nail holes and small cracks, and that they prime when the surface needs it.
You also want to know about how they protect your surfaces like the floors, the fixtures, the trim, and anything else that shouldn’t have paint on it.
Want crisp lines? Make sure you ask directly: “How do you make sure you get clean edges at the ceiling and the baseboards?” A pro will walk you through their taping process without hesitation.
If the answer is vague, it’s worth noting.

3. Ask what tools and materials they’re using
Professional painters use professional-grade equipment. That means the brushes, rollers, and application tools aren’t the same items you can pick up on Amazon for a weekend project.
Better tools hold more paint, apply it more evenly, and give you a smoother finish with fewer passes.
They also make the difference between a cut-in line that looks flawless versus one that looks hand-done.
But this isn’t about brand names. It’s about whether the crew treats their tools as part of their craft or as a cost to minimize.
If a painter is grabbing cheap rollers at the big box store to protect margin, that decision might show up on your walls.
4. Ask what paint they use, and why
A confident, knowledgeable painter will answer this question without any hesitation. A painter who gives you a vague answer is probably letting the customer’s budget dictate the paint selection or choosing whatever is the cheapest from their supplier.
